When we first moved to Japan, our expat friends in Nagoya highly recommend the Japanese by Renzo inc. app to help our Japanese language skills. It was by far the best Japanese app we purchased. Even though it’s expensive, it is well worth the cost (currently $7.99). I still use it all the time.
It was especially helpful to Blaine and me because we accidently left our Japanese-English dictionary in the states! Plus, who wants to lug around a heavy dictionary while they’re busy exploring cool stores, restaurants, and cafes in a foreign city (carrying around a dictionary just does not look chic and Blaine has a very strict policy about not looking like a tourist – although that’s fairly tough in Japan when you’re not Japanese).
We mainly use it for the dictionary function, but it’s also great for learning to write katakana, hiragana, and kanji because it shows you the correct stroke order and you can quickly access a list of all the kana (katakana and hiragana) and kanji characters.
Find it in the App Store
Type in “Japanese Renzo inc” in the app store search and it’s a red box with white kanji (Japanese characters) on the right side.
